Chapter 13

Bishop took me home. It had been a couple days since I’d been back. It felt like ages though. Bishop had given me a cup of orange juice and a chocolate chip cookie. It was surprisingly revitalizing where magic was concerned. Blood donation and magic slinging, like two peas in a pod.

After a quick snack I hobbled up to bed. I needed a break before I hit the books tomorrow. With no sense of grace, I fell face first into my pillow. I was asleep before I hit the pillow.

I slept like the dead. It was a deep, dreamless sleep that felt like an eternity. Ever since I’d been thrust into the world of magic and monsters, I’d been putting a lot of strain on my mind and body and it was finally starting to catch up.

When I woke up, it was still pretty dark out. A glance out the window showed me that the first streaks of sunlight were only barely beginning to paint the sky with brush strokes of gold. I was surprised I’d woken up so early, considering how tired I’d felt the night before. Even now, I couldn’t recall what day it was.

There was a knock at my bedroom door. My uncle was the king of early risers, so it didn’t surprise me. Had he heard me stir and come to check on me?

“Come in,” I said. My words felt thick as they left my lips, like I’d had one too many to drink—not that I’d ever had a drink before. That would be illegal, duh. Definitely don’t look under my bed.

The knob clicked and turned. The door creaked as it slowly swung open. My stomach dropped through the floor.

The disturbingly handsome devil - no pun intended - Azazel, walked into my bedroom. He was still rocking his Evil Alternate Universe Tobias look. Azazel’s teeth glittered as he smiled.

“Hey buddy, find my Grail yet?” Azazel spoke with a strange, sadistic joy in his voice, my voice. The world spun as the words were spoken. I remember screaming. The spinning turned into a blur.

I shot up straight in my bed, screaming so loud my throat was raw. Bishop burst into my room, his eyes flaring with purple light and staff in hand. He looked over at me, I probably looked like crap. He flicked the staff into a corner of the room and came over to me, the arcane light fading from his eyes.

“Hey, it’s okay.” Bishop grabbed my shoulders and looked over me. “What’s wrong? What happened?”

It took me several seconds to get my breathing under control. I wiped my forehead with my arm. I was drenched in sweat. I looked down at my bed. The sheets were soaked too, and from the smell of it, sweat wasn’t the only thing. That was embarrassing.

“It-It was Azazel…” I said breathlessly. I walked him through the brief but scarring dream.

Bishop stared into the middle distance, nodding thoughtfully. “If this being truly is Azazel, then he’s got to have a good reason for taunting you.
